There are many factors to choose from. Let’s go through them one by one.
Fixed or Portable Alarm Buttons
This will typically depend on how often you’ll be in one place. if you’re desk bound, behind say a counter, a fixed button will probably do the trick. If however you move around, then a portable version will be better. Most of our clients choose both.
Wired or Wirefree?
Interestingly, this is very often the starting point for people’s choice of system. This because everyone wants to understandably minimise the disruption that installing cables would involve.
Ergonomics & Robustness
These are important factors. In the event of an emergency. This is even more the case for portable triggers which are ideally lightweight too. We’ve seen many system out there that use triggers that were originally designed for garages… They will work though – in the sense that when you press the button – an alarm will go off – but will they activate if shattered in a scuffle? Can you easily find the button without looking at it. Can it be pressed discreetly? etc etc.
Call levels
You’ll definitely need two levels of call with portable staff attack triggers – more would be a waste and less impractical. With a press of a button, the system will send an ‘assistance’ call. A user should also be able to raise a higher level of alarm (known as attack alarm) – in our case by tugging the unit away from its holder.
“Wireless Staff Attack Systems – an Attractive Idea?
Undoubtedly, the prospect of anything wireless anything is attractive since it’s quick and easy to implement but one should consider other elements too”
Risk of Vandalism
There are other factors to consider too such as the risk of vandalism – so having ceiling receivers is often considered a superior solution since they cannot be so easily reached.
Size of Premises
In most cases, though not all, the concept lends itself better to smaller premises such as surgeries but even then, when faced with the feature comparison between wired and wire-free solutions, often prefer the former in new builds where disruption can be tolerated. Larger premises such as mental health or A&E depts., tend to prefer wired solutions.
